NSRI warns public to be cautious around Cape fur seals due to rabies

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has encouraged swimmers, paddlers and divers to remain aware and cautious around seals, as rabies among Cape fur seals is an evolving situation along parts of the coastline.
This follows an incident involving a seal and kayakers in Hout Bay, Cape Town, where authorities have removed two seals from the area.
One was involved in the incident on Saturday and another from Duiker Island on Wednesday.
NSRI Communications Manager, Andrew Ingram, says water users should report aggressive or unusual seal behaviour to the City of Cape Town as seals or rabid animals may display unusual aggression, disorientation, excessive drooling or paralysis.
“There are indications that the Duiker Island Seal Colony may be experiencing a rabies flare up. While most encounters are not aggressive, we urge water users to remain cautious and to avoid approaching seals whether inland or in the water. If you notice any aggressive seal behaviour, please report it to the City of Cape Town on 021 480 7700.”
