Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has committed to stepping in to stabilise two of the country’s most troubled state owned entities, Telkom and the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).
Government’s intervention comes as both parastatals have been grappling with financial strain for years, with Telkom even facing the threat of liquidation due to its deteriorating financial position.
Godongwana confirms that Treasury will move first to settle the SABC’s billion rand debt owed to Sentech, a critical step aimed at easing the broadcaster’s immediate financial pressure.
He reiterates that this is one of two urgent matters he is handling.
The Minister further announces that the next phase to be undertaken during the course of the year will focus on addressing the SABC’s severe infrastructural decay, acknowledging the dire state of the corporation’s facilities and transmission systems.
Godongwana has acknowledged the dire state of the SABC’s facilities.
“What I’m doing at the moment is to attend to two issues which are urgent. One is avoid the liquidation of the Post Office. Secondly, it is to try to settle the SABC debt with Sentech. The next phase, during the course of the year, is to attend to the SABC infrastructure, which has to be attended. I made that point during the budget speech that we will attend to this matter during the course of the year.”
The Department of Communications has welcomed a R700 million allocation, a portion of which must go toward settling debts. – Additional reporting by Tshimangadzo Rhulani
