No-confidence vote: Action SA abstains fearing local govt collapse

Action SA Caucus Leader in the City of Johannesburg, Marcel Coutriers, says the party will not participate in the third vote of no-confidence in Mayor Dada Morero.
Coutriers says this is to block instability within the metro.
The high-stakes vote, tabled by Al Jama-ah and backed by other minority parties, will test the strength of the city’s governing coalition.
The motion was postponed last week pending legal advice on whether the vote should be conducted by secret ballot.
Council is in session and is expected to cast its ballots today.
Coutriers says, “the motion of no confidence. Ideally, we’d want to say yes or no. But the problem is, we always ask ourselves a question: are we creating instability? But at the same time, do we support the executive mayor now? So we will be creating instability if we vote yes and we remove the executive mayor, but we don’t necessarily support the executive mayor. So from our side, we’re going to abstain from the process.”
