MEC Buthelezi condemns destruction of electricity infrastructure

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi has condemned the destruction of electricity infrastructure, which has left areas in Richards Bay and Empangeni without power.
The Aquila and Grantham substations were damaged by suspected criminals on Wednesday.
The department’s spokesperson Senzelwe Mzila says the deliberate destruction of the control and protection wiring is a calculated threat to electricity supply in the two key economic hubs.
Mzila says technical teams in the uMhlathuze Municipality are working around the clock to restore power.
“This infrastructure is the essential backbone of service delivery, supporting not only electricity but also vital water and sanitation systems. MEC Buthelezi has called upon law enforcement agencies to apprehend those responsible. The MEC also calls upon members of the public to come forward with information that will assist law enforcement agencies,” he says.
