KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi says the relationship between the Chief of Staff in the Police Ministry Cedrick Nkabinde and Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who is on special leave, was suspicious, describing it as a possible cover up.
He is rounding up his testimony as the last witness before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee that is looking into concerns of national security.
Mkhwanazi says Mchunu got to know Nkabinde while he was working at IPID while Mchunu was the Premier of KZN.
“By IPID that might have implicated the minister. Under line my words. Might have. I am not saying it implicated. I believe. Why do I say that? It cannot be that the police walk into your door to come to investigate and from there you become friends in the manner that Nkabinde and the minister are this close.
From that it’s unbelievable. They are operating from completely different levels. It may be believed that’s what made the relationship between the two of them. It’s what Nkabinde told me they became close as a result of that visit. There might be something that have been a cover up. It is a murder case that involves one of the protectors of the minister when he was a premier.”
