Investigation traces Mathibelis company weapons to volatile Inanda

Investigation traces Mathibeli’s company weapons to volatile Inanda

The South African Police Services (SAPS) say their compliance investigation into businessman Calvin Mathibeli’s security company in Durban has linked weapons directly to the volatile Inanda area.
Authorities have confirmed that 11 firearms belonging to the security company are currently in police custody at the Inanda police station.
The compliance investigation follows a ruling by the Durban High Court on Tuesday, which dismissed Mathibeli’s urgent application to block the inspection.

Police say the weapons in police custody are alleged to have been confiscated during previous operations.
SAPS investigators are verifying a complex paper trail to reconcile the company’s inventory with the firearms recovered.
Police say according to the company’s internal ledger, it has registered 815 firearms. However, so far, the audit recorded 857 firearms, 42 more than what is registered – which police says paints a concerning picture.
Police are also concerned about the failure of following basic protocol.
They say the investigation so far has revealed that many of the firearms were registered incorrectly and official logs were filled out in pencil rather than in pen as required.
This police say it’s a direct violation of compliance standards which prevent records from being altered.
