Nkabinde Enquiry to resume with testimony of former IPID Investigator

Nkabinde enquiry: Taxi boss alleges multiple assassination attempts

KwaMaphumulo Taxi Association chairperson Sphamandla Mhlongo has told the Nkabinde Enquiry that he survived several assassination attempts allegedly carried out by the Cato Manor Organised Crime Unit.
Mhlongo says the attempts began while he was still an ordinary member of the association.
He was testifying virtually under heavy police guard from a court building in KwaZulu-Natal.
Mhlongo said this was the unit’s modus operandi to eliminate members of the KwaMaphumulo Taxi Association.
He alleged the killings carried out by the unit were at the request of the rival Stanger Taxi Association.
He says, “After my court appearance at Umlazi, my brother drove to Cato Manor, and he told me that he found Van Tonder as well as Mr Olivier, who was at the office. Then he told them that he’s not coming to interfere with their investigation. But he wants to tell them that they shouldn’t do that, what they normally do. Because Booysen was not there. He made a call to Booysen.”
