The IAVI-ADVANCE (Accelerate the Development of Vaccines and New Technologies to Combat the AIDS Epidemic) team convened in Entebbe at the Uganda Virus Research Institute and engaged in discussions with their partners from the MRC/UVRI & LSHTM Uganda Research Unit. The primary focus of these discussions was networking and the exchange of ideas to enhance capacity in the development of HIV vaccines.

For many of our readers, the MRC/UVRI & LSHTM Uganda Research Unit stands as an internationally acclaimed center of excellence in research and training. Established in 1988, its mission was to enhance understanding and control of the HIV epidemic in Uganda and globally, at the request of the Uganda Government to the United Kingdom (UK) Government. Over time, the Unit’s work has expanded beyond HIV to encompass various infections, including neglected, endemic, emerging, and re-emerging infections, as well as non-communicable diseases (NCDs).

The Unit is one of two UKRI/MRC Units located outside the UK, with the other being in the Gambia. Its strong affiliation with the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) ensures it has significant representation at the government level, facilitating the translation of research findings into actionable policies.

The Unit’s mission is to conduct high-quality research that contributes to knowledge and leads to better control of infectious and non-communicable diseases in Uganda, Africa, and globally. This mission is achieved through the translation of scientific discoveries into policy and practice and by fostering research capacity building.

Through partnerships with international organizations like IAVI, the Unit provides a high-quality research and research training environment. “We are committed to delivering impactful collaborative research and capacity building through strategic multi-level partnerships with the Uganda government, national, regional, and international research and academic institutions, as well as research communities, without whose support important studies cannot be conducted,” said Nancy Nandudu, head of communications and engagement at MRC/UVRI.

The Unit is also a key partner in various regional health-focused platforms, including The East African EDCTP network, the Lake Victoria Research Consortium, IAVI regional network, Africa CDC, and WHO.

ADVANCE’s Efforts Toward an HIV-Free World

ADVANCE (Accelerate the Development of Vaccines and New Technologies to Combat the AIDS Epidemic) is a 10-year cooperative agreement with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), under the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). This program is part of IAVI’s longstanding 22-year collaboration with USAID, which has significantly advanced HIV vaccine research and development while hastening the search for innovative biomedical prevention tools, including a safe and globally effective HIV vaccine.

Sub-Saharan Africa remains the region most severely affected by HIV and AIDS, with 25 million adults and children living with the virus, and where researchers encounter the most genetically diverse HIV sub-type infections.

ADVANCE’s primary goal is the development of a safe and globally effective HIV vaccine and biomedical prevention products, with leadership provided by African and Indian stakeholders, that are accessible to populations at risk of infection.

The ADVANCE partner network includes state-of-the-art African and Indian clinical research centers, along with extensive laboratory and research capabilities, including the IAVI-Human Immunology Laboratory at Imperial College London; the IAVI Neutralizing Antibody Center at Scripps Research in La Jolla, California; and the HIV Vaccine Translational Research Laboratory at the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute, located in Faridabad, Haryana, India.

The medications, a critical lifeline for many residents of Busia, were part of a substantial shipment provided to the district by the National Medical Stores, with an estimated value reaching into the hundreds of millions of shillings. The drugs encompassed essential treatments for prevalent and life-threatening diseases, including malaria and HIV/AIDS.

The calamity has left the district and its healthcare system in disarray, prompting an urgent inquiry into the circumstances that allowed such a disaster to transpire. Uganda Aids Commission Takes a Bold Step to Combat HIV Stigma with New Guidelines for People Living with Disabilities

The Uganda Aids Commission (UAC) has embarked on a significant endeavor aimed at combating HIV stigma and discrimination among people living with disabilities. To address this issue comprehensively, UAC has unveiled a translated version of the national policy guidelines designed to end the persistent stigma and discrimination surrounding HIV, which has long afflicted this marginalized demographic. The primary beneficiaries of this initiative are members of the deaf and blind communities, who have faced unique challenges due to the lack of accessible and critical information regarding HIV.

This groundbreaking move comes as a response to a pressing need within these communities. The associations representing the deaf and blind have been vocal about the significant information gap that has left many of their members vulnerable to HIV and compelled them into risky behaviors due to a lack of choice. The translated guidelines aim to bridge this information deficit and create a more inclusive and informed environment for individuals with disabilities.

The launch of these translated guidelines marks a pivotal moment in the fight against HIV-related stigma and discrimination in Uganda. Historically, people with disabilities, particularly those who are deaf and blind, have faced a double burden – not only dealing with their disabilities but also contending with the misinformation, discrimination, and marginalization associated with HIV. These individuals have been disproportionately affected by the negative consequences of HIV stigma, which includes a lack of access to healthcare, social exclusion, and a higher risk of contracting the virus.

Inspector General of Government Defends Decision to Withdraw Charges Against Former UNBS Director

UAC’s decision to make these policy guidelines accessible to the deaf and blind communities underscores their commitment to leaving no one behind in the fight against HIV. It is a testament to their dedication to ensuring that individuals living with disabilities have the tools and knowledge they need to protect themselves from HIV and access appropriate healthcare services when necessary.

The translated guidelines not only offer information about HIV prevention but also provide valuable insights into living with HIV for those who are already affected. They cover a wide array of topics, including testing, treatment, disclosure, and sexual and reproductive health, with a focus on addressing the unique needs and challenges of individuals with disabilities.

In addition to benefiting the deaf and blind communities directly, this initiative also aligns with broader global efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 3, which aims to ensure good health and well-being for all. By focusing on reducing HIV stigma and ensuring that people living with disabilities are informed and protected, the UAC is contributing to a more inclusive and healthier society for all Ugandans.

The launch of these translated guidelines represents a significant step towards ending the stigmatization and discrimination that have persisted for far too long. It is a clear message that every Ugandan, regardless of their abilities, has the right to accurate information about HIV, access to healthcare, and protection from stigma and discrimination. It sets the stage for a more inclusive and compassionate approach to tackling the HIV epidemic in Uganda.
