Uganda Cranes secured a 2-0 victory over Congo in their first home match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers in an electrifying encounter at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

The win propels Uganda to the top of Group K with four points, following their 2-2 draw against South Africa last Friday.

Aziz Kayondo opened the scoring in the 21st minute, sending a long cross into the box that evaded the Congolese goalkeeper and found its way into the net.

Despite Congo taking control of the match afterward, they failed to convert their possession into meaningful chances.

The visitors’ best opportunity came through Silvere Ganvoula Mboussy, but the striker couldn’t capitalize on Merveil Ndockyt’s well-placed cross.

Ndockyt himself came close to leveling the game in the second half but fired wide from outside the box.

Uganda could have doubled their lead earlier when Rogers Mato found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but his close-range shot missed the target.

Jude Ssemugabi sealed the victory in the 87th minute, tapping home after Allan Okello’s precise cross, securing the Cranes’ first win of the qualifiers.

Coach Paul Put’s side now turns its focus to a doubleheader against South Sudan, starting with another home fixture at Namboole on October 6.
