Transatlantic (2023)
Transatlantic | Official Trailer | Netflix
A brilliant and hugely underseen miniseries, Transatlantic tells the story of an American journalist stationed in Paris in 1940 and 1941. During her time there, she arranged for 2,000 refugees to escape the country who might have otherwise died in the war.
Starring Gillian Jacobs and featuring an excellent and broad ensemble, Transatlantic is serious without feeling self-important and smart without feeling overwritten. It’s a period drama about one of the most harrowing periods of history, and one that has surprising resonance with the present day. Transatlantic was not widely seen upon its release, but it deserves to be checked out whenever you have the time.
You can watch Transatlantic on Netflix.
Kevin Can F**k Himself (2021)
KEVIN CAN F**K HIMSELF Official Trailer | AMC & AMC+
A formally inventive dramedy, Kevin Can F**k Himself splits its time between a traditional multicamera sitcom and a more traditional drama. During the sitcom portions, the show is about a traditional, beautiful sitcom wife who is married to an overweight, self-centered manchild.
When she discovers that she can live a life outside the purview of the sitcom, though, she begins to plot for a way to take control of her existence. A smart, meta-examination of the way women are treated on sitcoms and have been for decades, the show literally flips the script, reminding us of all the ways that men fall short and are not held to account for it.
You can watch Kevin Can F**k Himself on Netflix.
The Midnight Club (2022)
THE MIDNIGHT CLUB | Welcome to Brightcliffe | Netflix
One of Mike Flanagan’s least seen miniseries, The Midnight Club is set at a secluded resort for terminal children who form a club and tell scary stories to one another. Even as they tell these short stories, they begin to suspect that everything at their treatment facility is not exactly as it seems.
Meditative, scary, and fascinating in equal measure, The Midnight Club is every bit as great as Flanagan’s other Netflix series, and was cruelly cut short after a single season, even though it could have gone for many more.
You can watch The Midnight Club on Netflix.
