Following nearly two years of service as Kenya’s High Commissioner to Uganda, Major General (Rtd) George Owino bids farewell to his post in Uganda. Throughout his tenure, commencing in August 2022, he has significantly influenced both diplomatic relations and the local sporting community, particularly in the realm of golf.

General Owino’s fervor for golf is widely recognized, earning him the esteemed title of Patron of the Uganda Golf Club (UGC). As he wraps up his term, UGC recently paid tribute to him during the Stanbic Mug held last month, dedicating the event to his dedicated service and unwavering commitment. During his farewell gathering at the Uganda Golf Club over the weekend, General Owino shared his reflections with NBS Tee Off, the channel’s weekly golf magazine, delving into his experiences during his time in Uganda.

“It has been an enriching experience on all fronts,” remarked General Owino. “From diplomatic endeavors to social interactions, and certainly, within the golfing community, Uganda has extended immense warmth and friendship to me.”

Acknowledging the hospitality of the Ugandan people, General Owino underscored the enduring partnership between Kenya and Uganda. He expressed satisfaction in witnessing the burgeoning interest in golf during his tenure, attributing part of this success to his efforts in mentoring and supporting budding golfers.

Club Captain Paul Rukundo praised General Owino as an exceptional figure, both on and off the golf course. “General Owino epitomizes the ethos of competition and sportsmanship,” remarked Rukundo. “His commitment to the game has not only honed his own skills but has also served as inspiration to others within the golfing fraternity.”

Reflecting on his journey, General Owino remarked, “Golf transcends boundaries and cultures, fostering mutual respect. It has been an honor to contribute to the advancement of this sport in Uganda and to strengthen the ties between our nations.”

As General Owino prepares for his next endeavor, his legacy as a diplomat and a golfer will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on those whose lives he has touched.
