New details have emerged about the tragic death of Assistant Superintendent of Police Emma Bagenda, the Officer-in-Charge of Ntawo Police Station, who was shot dead on Sunday night in an attack linked to suspected robbery.
The incident has been classified as murder and aggravated robbery by Mukono Police Division.
According to the official police report (MKN CRB 1708/2025), Bagenda and Police Constable Jackson Kiyingi were responding to reports of an alleged robbery along Nakabago Road when they spotted two suspects travelling on a motorcycle. They attempted to intercept the suspects, who refused to stop.
In the ensuing chase, Bagenda, riding ahead, tried to block the fleeing suspects, while Kiyingi jumped off their responding motorcycle to avoid a collision.
In the chaos, Jackson fell into an open trench and came under fire. Bagenda continued pursuing the suspects but was fatally shot in the head. Police later recovered his body lying face down in a pool of blood at the scene, along with four spent cartridges.
The attackers escaped with a police firearm, which had been carried by Kiyingi. Kiyingi survived the ordeal and was first taken to Mukono General Hospital before being referred to Nakasero Hospital for treatment. Investigations indicate that the suspects were travelling from Nasuti Town toward Ntawo-Nyenje Road when the confrontation occurred.
At the time of the attack, Bagenda was wearing a dark blue police jacket, a grey T-shirt, black trousers, and a single shoe on his left foot. Police immediately launched a search operation, led by the Mukono District Police Commander with support from CID, SOCO, operations, and K9 units.
Bagenda’s body was conveyed to Mulago City Mortuary, and authorities are revisiting the scene, examining CCTV footage, recording witness statements, and using cluster information to track the suspects, who remain unidentified.
Colleagues remember Bagenda as an intelligent, jolly, and knowledgeable officer who served most of his career as OC in the islands of Kalangala. His sudden death has sent shockwaves through Mukono Police Division, where he had just been deployed to Ntawo.
