Police Spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke has urged individuals traveling on water bodies to prioritize safety by wearing life jackets. As the rainy season approaches, the police advise the public to be extra cautious, particularly in flooded areas where hidden hazards such as deep holes can pose a serious drowning risk.

A recent incident in Bukedi North highlighted this danger. On August 12, 2024, at approximately 6:00 PM, the body of 12-year-old Nahula Brenda was recovered from a trench filled with rainwater in Kibali 2 Cell, Budaka Town Council, Budaka District. The young girl drowned while attempting to cross the trench during a heavy downpour, and her body was carried by the floodwaters to a nearby swamp.

Tragedy also struck in Rwenzori West, where seven fishermen drowned after their boat capsized on Lake George, near Nyakakeera Landing Site, Kitagwenda District. The incident, which occurred on the night of August 12, 2024, was likely caused by strong winds and rough waves.

In a separate incident on July 23, 2024, at around 2:00 PM, two men, 32-year-old fishmonger Seromasi William and 22-year-old Muwonge Disan, drowned near Irima Landing Site in Nakasongola District’s Kalungi Sub County. One person was successfully rescued from the scene.

The police continue to stress the importance of vigilance and proper safety measures when navigating water bodies, particularly during the rainy season.
