President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni today welcomed H.E. Ambassador Josefa Sacko, the African Union Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy, and Sustainable Environment, at State House Entebbe.
Ambassador Sacko paid a courtesy visit accompanied by Hon. Frank Tumwebaze, Uganda’s Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries.
The discussions centered on preparations for the upcoming Extraordinary Agricultural Summit of Heads of State and Government, which will be held in Kampala in January 2025.
President Museveni expressed his appreciation for Uganda being selected as the host nation, highlighting the significance of agriculture in Africa’s future.
“That is music to my ears, and I am very happy to host this summit. The potential for agriculture is huge in Africa,” said President Museveni. “Uganda is fortunate to have preserved its indigenous agriculture—cows, goats, bananas, cassava, fish, and more. Our task now is to modernize and commercialize it.”
Museveni emphasized the adverse effects of colonialism on Africa’s agricultural development, noting that dislocation from heritage had contributed to food insecurity. He reaffirmed Uganda’s strength in agriculture, spanning crops from forests, tropical savannas, and temperate regions.
The previous AU agricultural summit took place in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, in 2014, where the Malabo Declaration was adopted. This declaration set a roadmap for accelerated agricultural growth and transformation across the continent.
The meeting was also attended by Maj. Gen. David Kasura Kyomukama, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries, among other officials.
