Uganda Invited to Inaugural Williem Strauss Rugby 7s Tourney
The Uganda Rugby Union has officially received an invitation from the Blue Bulls Rugby to participate in the inaugural Williem Strauss International Rugby 7s tournament.
Both the men’s and women’s Uganda Rugby Cranes 7s teams will represent the nation in this event, which will bring together top rugby teams from across the globe.
The tournament is set to take place from September 6th to 9th, 2024, in Modimolle (Nylstroom), South Africa.
This inaugural event will feature elite teams, including the Springbok Women’s 7s team and the Blitzboks, among other renowned international squads.
Uganda’s participation marks another significant opportunity for the national teams to compete at a high level on the global stage.
“We are honored to receive this invitation to the Williem Strauss International Rugby 7s tournament and look forward to having our teams participate and compete at a high level,” said Isaac Lutwama, CEO of the Uganda Rugby Union.
In preparation for this event, seven players from the men’s squad have been replaced, including Ian Munyanyi (C), Phillip Wokorach, Timothy Mugisha, William Nkore, Roy Kisito, and Timothy Kisiga.
The women’s squad also saw four replacements: Mary Gloria Ayot, Sarah Kirabo, Lona Sandra Amoli, and Nasozi Maimuna.
Uganda’s participation in this tournament not only strengthens the partnership with Blue Bulls Rugby but also ensures that the Uganda 7s teams for both men and women are better prepared for the 2025 Challenger Series, which kicks off in January 2025.
