U19 World Cup Africa Qualifier: Uganda Learn Opponents
Ahead of the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier due in Rwanda later this month, the International Cricket Council has revealed the two groups for the tournament.
The tournament that was initially scheduled to take place last month and only postponed due to changes in qualification criteria will involve two groups of four nations each, and will run from 22-29 September in Kigali, Rwanda.
Uganda who finished fourth at the inaugural edition in 2022 in Botswana have been pitted against Namibia, and their East African neighbors Rwanda and Kenya in Group A.
Rwanda made history by qualifying for the country’s first ever ICC World Cup event in 2022 when they emerged as regional winners in Botswana. They will be looking to conquer Group A, but Uganda will also seek to advance from the group stages and aim for the final.
Kenya secured their place in this qualifier after finishing as losing finalists in the pre-qualifier (Division 2) ten days ago. They progressed alongside Malawi who won that qualifier.
Malawi is placed in Group B alongside Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Nigeria. Zimbabwe were among the nations that acquired automatic qualification for this World Cup in 2023, but they have been made to go through a qualifier this time around.
With just one slot up for grabs, they are looked as favourites to clinch it, and ultimately qualify for the World Cup that will be hosted by Malaysia next year.
The Baby Victoria Pearls will begin their campaign on Sunday 22nd against group favourites Namibia at the Gahanga 2 Oval before taking on Kenya the next day at the IPRC Stadium.
They will then take an off day before their final group game on 25th against the hosts.
