The Minister of State for Kampala Capital City and Metropolitan Affairs, Hon. Kyofatogabye Kabuye, has publicly urged Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago to step down due to the ongoing chaos in the city.

Kyofatogabye expressed frustration with Lukwago’s management, questioning his ability to effectively lead Kampala.

Lukwago’s leadership has been marred by controversy, having been previously impeached in 2013 but reinstated by a high court order.

The recent dismissal of several Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) officials was deemed “long overdue” by Kyofatogabye, who cited rampant corruption and misuse of funds under Lukwago’s watch.

Kyofatogabye criticized Lukwago for prioritizing activism in Katonga over addressing the city’s pressing issues.

“Ninety percent of Lukwago’s time is spent on activism… If only the Lord Mayor could spend just one week—five days—focused on his duties, perhaps he would accomplish a lot more,” he stated.

The Lord Mayor has been accused of neglecting his duties, contributing to Kampala’s infrastructure challenges, including floods, potholes, and traffic congestion.

“Lukwago should actually be the first person to resign as the Lord Mayor,” Kyofatogabye said.

“I wonder where he finds the audacity to walk around with his head held high amidst all this chaos in the city.

He should be grateful to all of us who have helped him maintain a good image despite him being a bad person.”

The call for resignation comes amidst growing concerns about the city’s governance and infrastructure.
