President Museveni Revamps KCCA Leadership with New Appointments

In a significant move to revitalize the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), President Yoweri Museveni has appointed new leaders to spearhead the organization. Following the recent firings of top officials, including Dorothy Kisaka, David Luyimbazi, and Dr. Daniel Okello, after the devastating Kiteezi landfill disaster, the President has brought in fresh faces to restore public trust and improve service delivery.

Executive Director: Daudi Migereko is a Ugandan politician who has served as the minister of lands, housing and urban development in the cabinet of Uganda, He was appointed to that position on 27 May 2011. He replaced Omara Atubo, who was dropped from the cabinet. In the cabinet reshuffle of 2016, the president dropped him from this position and replaced him with Betty Amongi . From 16 February 2009 until 27 May 2011, he served as the government’s chief whip in the parliament of Uganda Before that, he was the minister of energy and mineral development in the cabinet. Migereko also represented Butembe County, Jinja District in the parliament from 2006 to 2016, a position he surrendered to Nelson Lufafa  who won the seat in the 2016 General Elections.He is a seasoned expert in urban planning, will provide strategic guidance and oversee effective administration.

Deputy Executive Director: Amanda Aziidah Ngabirano is a Ugandan urban planner and academic, who is a lecturer and researcher in the Department of Architecture & Physical Planning in the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology at Makerere University .She was also a promoter of bicycle transport in urban areas, touting that mode of transportation to “reduce noise and air pollution, lower transport costs, decongest urban centres, create more green spaces and achieve more inclusive mobility” renowned for her expertise in public health, She will support the Executive Director in managing the authority’s business and resources.

Director Public Health KCCA: Dr. Olendo Samuel Odongo,was the former aspirant for ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) Central Executive Committee (CEC) Regional Vice Chairperson Northern  Uganda . a distinguished figure in environmental sustainability, Oledo the NRM outspoken young turk who was recently rumored to be among the names enlisted for new ambassadorial  roles, has at all times advocated for the Northern Uganda Agenda, aimed at championing  development, economic re-engineering, social cohesion mechanisms, megaprojects, Employment opportunities/ share of the National Cake, scholarships and Education master plan, among others. He will guide the authority on efficient public health management.

The new team faces significant challenges, including restoring public trust, improving waste management and sanitation services, and addressing the city’s infrastructure and development needs . As they take office, residents and stakeholders eagerly await tangible improvements in service delivery and accountability.

The President’s decision to appoint experts in urban planning and public health reflects his commitment to addressing the systemic failures that led to the Kiteezi landfill disaster. With their wealth of experience, the new leaders are expected to drive positive change and enhance the quality of life for Kampala’s residents.
