The Inspector General of Police Abas Byakagaba has recognized the exceptional professionalism and patriotic spirit of two traffic officers, whose heroic acts have been making waves on social media.
Police Constable Abdullah Tusiime attached to Kira-Road Police Division and Constable Charles Makawa from Jinja-Road Police Station, are being hailed as heroes for their dedication to duty.
Constable Tusiime was captured bravely controlling traffic during a heavy downpour in Kampala last Thursday, while Constable Makawa was assaulted by a female driver at Nakawa Traffic lights.
Inspector General of Police Abas Byakagaba has recognized the outstanding efforts of two police officers, Constable Abdullah Tusiime and Constable Charles Makawa, through Assistant Commissioner of Police Kituuma Rusoke at a security press briefing held at Naguru Police headquarters.
“This Constable Tusiime, you must have seeing him on social media, he went viral braving rain and carrying out his traffic duties around Mawanda road,” Rusoke said.
“So in the view of Uganda Police, he demonstrated remarkable dedication to his responsibilities, and we have been receiving numerous reports praising his enthusiasm, also the professionalism of PC Makawa.”
Rusoke noted that this is the reason that has triggered the Inspector General of Police to appreciate him for being patriotic spirit and professionalism that was exhibited by Makawa during the incident.
“The Inspector General of Police has tasked me to particularly make them know that they have been appreciated by the Police; on the part of Makawa, he behaved so much professionally, because he would have responded in self-defence, but he did not escalate the situation, we really want to thank him for that,” Rusoke added.
Rusoke said the file for Mercy Timbitwire Bashisha the female driver who assaulted the officer has been completed and she will be taken to court on charges of traffic office and assault. (She was later in the afternoon produced in court and remanded till November 4th.)
Police have called on the public to respect traffic officers and comply with traffic laws, warning that such assaults will not be tolerated.
