Kisoro district stands a high chance of environmental hazards after it was discovered that over 90% of the population in the district rely on firewood and charcoal for cooking,a practice that poses significant risk to the environment. This issue was highlighted yesterday 05th Dec 2025 during the launch of a government program to supply free gas kits to the people of Kisoro at the Stabex branch in Kisoro Municipality. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, in partnership with Stabex International, has launched this initiative to provide free gas to households in Kisoro Municipality. The program aims to reduce deforestation by offering communities a cleaner and more sustainable source of energy.According to Judith Muja, the Kisoro District Senior Environment Officer, over 90% of the people in Kisoro still use firewood and charcoal, which continues to endanger the environment. She noted that although some residents use biogas for cooking, the adoption of gas is encouraged because it improves access to clean energy in the district. She added that women and girls, who often move long distances to collect firewood exposing them to various risks would benefit greatly by joining the gas program.Susan Nalwoga, the Senior Communication Officer in the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, emphasized that the Government of Uganda, in partnership with Stabex International, is supplying free gas to Ugandans as a way of reducing the reliance on firewood.
