TRAGIC! Gulu Teen Dies After Brutal Mob Beating Over Alleged Phone Theft

Shock and grief have gripped Gulu City after 16-year-old Otim Leon Joshua, a student of Exel High School in Mukono, died following a savage mob beating that has since ignited a storm of false political rumours online.
Otim, who had returned home for the holidays to stay with his mother in Customs Corner Cell, reportedly left home on the evening of December 6th saying he was heading to town. His family waited for him deep into the night, but he never returned.
At dawn, around 5am, two boda boda riders knocked on the mother’s door—carrying the battered and unconscious teenager on their motorcycle. The riders revealed that Otim had been violently assaulted at Lailong by a group of boys who accused him of stealing a mobile phone around 4am.
His devastated mother rushed him to Lacor Hospital, where he struggled for days in critical condition. Despite doctors’ efforts, the young boy passed away on December 9th at midday, sending shockwaves through the community.
Police immediately swung into action, recording statements from the mother and the boda riders. Investigations have now confirmed that the teen was attacked by four boys, all of whom are currently on the run. A manhunt is underway.
But even as the family mourns, social media has been buzzing with wild and false claims linking the boy’s death to a scuffle involving security agencies and NUP presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi. Police have dismissed these claims as baseless propaganda, insisting that Otim died from injuries inflicted by the mob that accused him of theft.
As the hunt for the suspects intensifies, residents are demanding justice for the schoolboy whose holiday visit to his mother ended in a horrifying tragedy.
