KAMULI – The National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB) has once again demonstrated its pivotal role in strengthening Uganda’s livestock sector after successfully concluding a major farmer support outreach at Kasolwe Stock Farm in Kamuli District. The outreach, which drew hundreds of enthusiastic farmers from across the Busoga sub–region, has been hailed as a game-changer for household incomes, livestock genetics, and overall production capacity.
The high-impact intervention was officiated by the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs, the Rt. Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, who is also the Kamuli District Woman MP. Farmers applauded the government’s continued investment in transforming agricultural livelihoods through strategic stock farm programs.
Massive Distributions to Power Up Livestock Value Chains
NAGRC delivered a comprehensive package of elite livestock genetics and production-support tools, including: 20 pure Jersey bulls for milk-yield improvement, 185 grandparent pig stock for high-performance piggery multiplication, 50,000 brooded Kuroiler chicks, ready for farmer uptake, 85 improved goats for meat and milk value addition, 500 mineral salt bags to enhance fertility and livestock health and 20 Artificial Insemination kits accompanied by a variety of quality semen.
These distributions are expected to significantly increase productivity and strengthen the livestock value chain across Busoga, especially among smallholder farmers.
By equipping farmers with improved breeds and modern production inputs, NAGRC is ensuring that households can tap into higher returns per animal. The intervention directly promotes: Enhanced genetic quality of livestock, better feeding and management practices, improved farmer access to reproductive technologies and expanded income-generating opportunities.
NAGRC’s Executive Director emphasized the need for farmers to fully utilize the improved breeding and management technologies demonstrated at Kasolwe Stock Farm, noting that this is the surest path to commercializing livestock enterprises at the grassroots.
Government Interventions Bearing Fruit
The Kasolwe outreach is part of a broader government strategy to revamp national livestock production through well-managed and efficiently resourced stock farms. By decentralizing elite genetics and modern farming tools, NAGRC continues to bridge gaps between research institutions and ordinary farmers.
Farmers in Busoga expressed gratitude, describing the outreach as timely, practical, and transformative for the region’s livestock economy.
NAGRC&DB’s continued commitment to livestock improvement is reinforcing Uganda’s journey toward agricultural modernization, food security, and rural prosperity.
