URA Tax Deadline Notice Sparks Election Jitters of Internet Disruption

The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) notice to file and pay monthly taxes by January 12, 2026, three days before the usual deadline (15th January) which also coincides with the highly anticipated January 15 general elections, has triggered anxiety among Ugandans.
In a public notice issued on Tuesday, URA urged taxpayers to clear their Value Added Tax (VAT), PAYE, Withholding Tax and other statutory obligations earlier than usual, citing the upcoming presidential and parliamentary polls.
The announcement immediately ignited debate online, with many Ugandans taking to X (formerly Twitter) to question the timing of the notice.

Several users accused URA of anticipating an internet shutdown, restricted movement, or disruptions in online services during and after election day—a pattern witnessed in previous election cycles.
“URA knows what is coming. That’s why they want taxes paid early,” one user wrote, while others warned businesses and individuals to brace for possible digital blackouts.
URA, however, maintained that the move is meant to help taxpayers avoid penalties and interest due to late filing, assuring the public that its service centres and contact centre will remain fully operational.
URA insists they can’t change the reporting date but simply reminding taxpayers of their obligation since 15th will be a voting day.
UCC has also since allayed fears of internet shutdown.
Despite the reassurance, the 12th January notice has only deepened public suspicion as the country heads into one of its most tense election periods in recent years.
With memories of past election-related restrictions still fresh, many Ugandans say the tax notice is yet another sign that January 15 could come with surprises—both during and after polling day.
