Court sets Date for Bireetes Bail Ruling

Court sets Date for Bireete’s Bail Ruling

Kampala-Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court has set 28th January 2026 as the date at which it will deliver a Ruling on a bill application which was filed by Sarah Bireete, the Executive Director for Center for Constitutional Governance (CCG) who is on currently on remand on charges of obtaining and disclosing National Voter’s Information without consent from the Electoral Commission.

During Prosecutions’ response to the application, Prosecutor Joan Keko asked court not to grant Bireete bail because she lacks substantial sureties although she had presented three including Hon. Winnie Kiiza , the former Leader of opposition in Parliament.
Keko told court that the sureties have no clear jobs that they presented to court as they were standing sureties.
The trial Magistrate Nankya Jatiko has therefore adjourned the matter to 28th January to deliver her ruling.
On addressing the press immediately after court, Hon. Miria Matembe, a prominent Woman Activist in Uganda, has expressed worry on how a female prosecutor has insisted that court should deny a fellow lady bail.
Prosecution alleges that between January and December 2025 at various places within Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso Districts, Sarah Birete unlawfully obtained or disclosed National Voter’s Information data, which is controlled and processed by the Electoral Commission; thus offending Sec 35 and 2 of the Data Protection and Privacy Act.
