Calls for accountability after high GBV cases against SAPS members

The Gauteng Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety has called for the enforcement of accountability measures among members of the SAPS in the province. This comes after about 97 members of the SAPS nationwide were found to have been accused of sexual violence.
The committee says it assessed several police stations across the province and found that no one was compliant with the Domestic Violence Act. The committee says the findings are deeply worrying.
Committee spokesperson Thebe Khumalo says, “The committee reaffirms that compliance with the domestic violence act is non-negotiable”
He says, “The committee will intensify its oversight, engage further with SAPS leadership and relevant oversight bodies, and pursue accountability measures to ensure that police stations comply with both the letter and the spirit of the law. The protection of victims of domestic violence remains an absolute priority for the Gauteng Provincial Legislature”.
