NCC to probe 9 sanitary pad suppliers for harmful products

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has revealed that it will be investigating nine suppliers of sanitary pads that millions of South African women and girls use monthly.
The announcement comes amid a recent study conducted by the University of the Free State, revealing that certain sanitary pads and panty liners may contain harmful endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs).
These chemicals are said to be linked to health complications such as hormonal imbalance, infertility, endometriosis and cancer.
NCC Acting Commissioner, Hardin Ratshisusu says they will prioritise the investigation, and the affected suppliers will be afforded an opportunity to respond to the concerns before a final determination is made.
“The National Consumer Commission has initiated an investigation against nine suppliers of sanitary pads. These suppliers include suppliers of Kotex, Always, Willflow, Stayfree, Lil-Lets and other brands. The investigation aims to review and assess the compliance of the suppliers with the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, particularly those that deal with the quality of goods that should be supplied to the market. The findings of the study by the University of the Free State raises serious concerns affecting women and girls, which warrants an investigation.”
