There is high police visibility in Atlantis on the Cape West Coast, following the murder of a 14-year-old teenager at Atlantis High School on Wednesday.
It is alleged that the teen was shot and killed, when an unidentified man approached the driver of a mini-bus taxi who was waiting outside the school to load the children and randomly started shooting at the driver, as well as the children in the taxi.
Two other children also sustained injuries.
Police say the 14-year-old’s body was found on the school premises. Atlantis Community Police Forum Chairperson, Noel Cloete, says the incident is believed to be linked to the ongoing dispute over taxi routes in Atlantis and Killarney.
“The situation in Atlantis is very tense at the moment. Residents are making more use of the My-City Bus Service. Very few taxis are visible on the roads. A lot of parents are still hesitant to send their children to school. Attendance at the Atlantis Secondary School where the incident took place was at about 21 % on Friday. Counseling has been provided for the learners and staff at the school.”
