Aucamp pledges to continue supporting fight against rhino poaching

Forestry, Fisheries and Environment Minister Willie Aucamp has pledged to continue to support the fight against rhino poaching in Mpumalanga.
This follows an increase in rhino poaching cases in the province in 2025 compared to 2024.
There’s an overall 16% decrease in the cases in the country.
The province lost 178 rhinos last year, up from 92 in 2024.
The Kruger National Park was the most affected with nearly a 100% increase in rhino poaching.
Minister Aucamp briefed the media at the park on the factors driving the surge in rhino poaching in Mpumalanga.
“Last year in Mozambique, they had the unrest just after the elections and we immediately saw a spike in the poaching events that took place. We also saw it a little bit less this year, but we saw it after the floods. Right after the floods, the rivers prohibited access, but when the rivers subsided a bit and we had roads that we could not access, we saw an increase in the attempts of poaching,” says Aucamp.
