United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned the massive joint US-Israeli military strikes against Iran.
This follows the killing of the Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the strikes on Saturday.
Guterres has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and for countries to uphold international law and the UN Charter.
He has also condemned Iran’s subsequent retaliatory strikes of US interests in several countries in the Middle East.
Addressing an emergency session of the UN Security Council in New York, Guterres says, “We are witnessing a grave threat to international peace and security. Military action carries the rick of igniting a chain of events that no one can control in the most volatile region of the world. Let me be clear: There is no viable alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes. Lasting peace can only be achieved through peaceful means including genuine dialogue and negotiations.”
