The KwaZulu-Natal Human Settlements Department has given the assurance that it is providing support to the surviving members of the family of five children that died in a shack fire in Ballito. The incident happened in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The children’s mother is in hospital in a critical condition after attempting to save them. One child is reported to have survived.
“We are looking at groceries because they are need of. Because there’s a group of relatives from the Eastern Cape that has just arrived here. We are also looking at assisting the family with documentation because their home affairs of documents were completely destroyed. The MEC has also spoken to the MEC for social development so that we can bring social workers. This is to ensure that the family gets much needed counselling. But all in all it’s a very tragic day, the MEC for health has also assigned a team of dedicated health professionals who are looking after the surviving mother and the little one who survived,” the department’s spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya elaborates.
Investigations are under way.
