Compliance to be checked at Ormonde building after collapse

The MMC for Public Safety in the City of Johannesburg, Mgcini Tshwaku, says authorities will investigate whether proper construction inspections were conducted following the collapse of a two-storey building in Ormonde that claimed six lives.
Three survivors were pulled from the rubble, one of whom is being treated in hospital.
Three others are still missing.
The incident occurred at Amethyst Business Park.
Tshwaku says: “We need to check because at a certain stage of construction, an inspector must go out with a drawing from an engineer (that is) approved. Remember that drawing will tell you what strength of material you are going to use. They will tell you the size of a rebar, which is the iron that you put into the concrete. He must take that drawing and come on site at frequent times during the stage of construction.”
