The Gauteng Health Department says 23% of children aged six to 14 years in the country are overweight or obese.
The department is stepping up efforts to combat rising childhood obesity in the province with the launch of the Asibe Healthy Jozi Kids initiative.
It aims to promote healthy eating, increase physical activity and create supportive environments for children.
MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko says they will host the Provincial World Obesity Day Indaba in Sedibeng on Wednesday.
“We work with schools, parents, healthcare workers and partners to promote healthy eating, regular physical activity and supportive environments for our children. Prevention starts at home, at school and in our communities. We must encourage our children to move more, eat better and build healthy habits that will protect them for life.”
