US President Donald Trump has reportedly said that he needs to be personally involved in selecting Iran’s next leader – after the military escalation led by the United States and Israel against Iran entered its sixth day.
Trump was speaking in a telephonic interview with the Axios News outlet earlier on Thursday.
He repeated the same views in an interview with Reuters where he said the US wanted to be involved in the process of choosing the person who was going to lead Iran into the future.
Trump likened his potential involvement in the choosing of Iran’s next leader to that of his role in the ouster of Venezuela’s sitting President Nicolas Maduro and his subsequent replacement by Vice President Dulcy Rodriguez with whom the US has strengthened a working relationship.
Weighing in on the speculation that the assassinated Supreme Leader’s son Mojtaba Khamenei was favoured to replace his father, Trump called him a lightweight and said he was an unacceptable choice, Trump telling Axios they want someone who would bring harmony and peace to Iran.
Mojtaba Khamenei is viewed as a hardline cleric with deep ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard and has never held public office.
