NSFAS to release student accommodation funding next week

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has promised to release the first accommodation funding for 2026 next week Friday. Some student accommodation providers have expressed frustration with delays in payments for students they are housing.
Some of the landlords also want the financial aid scheme to pay their historical debt.
NSFAS Acting CEO Waseem Carrim says they are open to engaging with landlords with valid claims.

PROHIBITED PRACTICES (DO NOT)
Accommodation Providers must not
• House students without first confirming their NSFAS funding status.
• Request deposits or top-up payments from NSFAS-funded students.
• Relocate or evict students without following lawful due process. pic.twitter.com/T3brZ95GoD

“As it relates to historical payments, during the cause of 2025, NSFAS made considerable progress in clearing the backlog of historical payments. Close to R400 million was dispersed to clear backlogs of 2024/ 2025 payments. However, we are open to engage landlords who still feel that they have outstanding claims and I want to ensure that any valid outstanding claims, either from 2024 or 2025 will be settled.”
