Residents of Sigonde quit backyard farming after elephant raids

Residents of Sigonde near Musina in Limpopo say they have abandoned their backyard farming after stray elephants repeatedly destroyed their crops during harvest season.
A herd of elephants was spotted in the area on Thursday night, raising safety concerns.
Residents suspect the animals may have strayed from the nearby Kruger National Park or crossed from neighbouring Zimbabwe through the Limpopo River.
Community members say the herd often arrives at the village at harvest time, causing significant damage to their fields.
One of the affected residents, Ndivhuwo Kwinda, says she stopped farming after suffering major losses last year when the elephants destroyed her crops.
“The elephant that I saw is so huge, we are now even scared when we are sleeping in the house because it may attack anytime, as dogs bark at it when it comes. They have been destroying our crops since last year. This year, I was forced not to farm, and it’s painful when I see others harvesting from their fields. They are so many, they are just around the bush, and they’ll come when the sun sets.”
