Siviwe Gwarube concerned as fewer learners choose Maths and Science

Basic Education Minister, Siviwe Gwarube, says she is concerned about the uptake of Mathematics and Science participation at schools. Ahead of International Women’s Day, Gwarube was taking part in a panel discussion with Accountancy bodies on how to grow the number of girls taking up accountancy.

The number of African women in chartered accountancy stands at just more than 8,500.
The Department of Basic Education wants professional bodies to collaborate to build sustainable change.
Gwarube says a positive development is that more schools are offering accounting as a subject, but the maths uptake is not good.
“More and more schools are offering accounting as a subject and we saw an uptake this year, which was really, really good, but I am equally concerned about the in drop in Maths and Science participation,” says Gwarube.
