The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has postponed the testimony of suspended EMPD Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi to 23 March.
The commission has heard that Mkhwanazi’s legal representative had only recently been appointed and requires more time to prepare for the proceedings.
His attorney Nkosana Khumalo also told the commission that Mkhwanazi recently underwent eye surgery and is scheduled for another procedure.
“I only met the witness yesterday evening and I had to quickly consult with him. And during consultation I dwell much as to what is it that we discussed. I’ll just come to the crux of the issues that were raised during consultation which is the fact that there are documents that he has to furnish me in order to prepare for his next testimony. At this point in time, chair, I literally have nothing, no paper, nothing from him that comes from the commission.”

Meanwhile, North-West businessman Suliman Carrim has told the commission that he was advised to falsely suggest he had political influence, in order to recover money he had invested in a police services tender.
Carrim has reflected on his encounters with attempted murder accused Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
He says the meetings led him to give Matlala a R10 million investment linked to a contract to provide medical services to the SAPS.
Carrim says the arrangement collapsed and after failing to receive repayment, businessman Brown Mogotsi advised him to tell Matlala he had a close relationship with the police minister in order to gain leverage.
Carrim told the commission he was unaware of the relationship between Mogotsi and Matlala.
