BMA launches anti-corruption campaign at ports of entry

The Border Management Authority (BMA) has launched a two day anti-corruption campaign aimed at eradicating corruption at the country’s ports of entry.
This follows the dismissal of more than 50 immigration officials since 2023 for corrupt activities, including fraudulent passport stamping and the illegal extension of travelers’ stay in the country.
The BMA says it currently has 38 active cases with more dismissals on the way.
BMA Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato says the campaign is meant to deter officials from being involved in criminal activities, as well as restoring integrity at the country’s borders.
“The fundamental challenges are in the stream of immigration and that is where the facilitation of illegal immigration is actually taking place. And it is for that reason that we then thought, let’s be proactive and engage the people ahead of time, tell them the dangers of corrupt activities, tell them about national security imperatives, tell them about patriotism, but more critically partner with the Department of Correctional Services. Bring those people that are serving time to come and talk to those that are here so that they can tell life stories and say I used to work here, but because of greed, I got fired, I’m now serving five years in prisons and I’ve lost everything.”
