National Coloured Congress (NCC) leader and MP Fadiel Adams has sharply criticised the conduct of KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
Adams continued to testify before the Ad Hoc Committee probing allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption and political interference in the criminal justice system.
He told the committee that Mkhwanazi’s July press conference may have amounted to defeating the ends of justice.
Adams says while he initially supported Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who has been placed on special leave, on the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team, the minister may have overreached by not first consulting the relevant structures.
He questions, “What was the reason for the, for the 6th of July press conference? It was, according to General Mkwanazi himself, because the National Commissioner was at the gates of prison. It was to defeat the ends of justice if he was telling the truth. This is what I’m saying. It’s about the capture of the SAPS. It had nothing to do with the PKTT. The PKTT had been agreed upon in the portfolio in front of all of us that it was no longer necessary.”
ANC MP Khusela Diko asked, “So you think Minister Mchunu was correct to disband the PKTT?”
Adams responded, “I think that the minister may have overreached. I think he should have discussed it with the IMC, which I didn’t think of at the time. But I’m willing to concede that because I was in full support of the minister. However, there was no disagreement on the disbandment of the PKTT.”
