The Uganda Police Force is set to reintroduce roadblocks as part of renewed efforts to curb the rising crime rate in Ibanda District and other parts of Western Uganda.
The development was revealed by Ubaldo Bamunoba, the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) and Chief Political Commissar of the Uganda Police Force, during a security stakeholders’ meeting held at Ibanda Hall.
The meeting brought together key district leaders, including the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Regional Police Commanders (RPCs), District Internal Security Officers (DISOs), LC V and LC III chairpersons, Division Police Commanders (DPCs), and other security stakeholders.
According to Bamunoba, the discussions focused on addressing major security concerns affecting the district, including cattle theft, theft of agricultural produce, land disputes, domestic violence, and other petty crimes that continue to impact livelihoods.
Among the key resolutions reached was the introduction of snap road checks in collaboration with veterinary officers across sub-counties. The checks will regulate and monitor the movement of cattle as part of efforts to curb livestock theft.
“We also emphasized the need for political reconciliation among local leaders to foster unity and strengthen collective responsibility in addressing community challenges,” Bamunoba said.
The meeting also resolved to strengthen multi-stakeholder engagement in security and community sensitization efforts. This will involve closer collaboration with Community Development Officers, community-based organizations, and religious leaders to promote awareness, conflict resolution, and social cohesion.
In addition, sub-counties were urged to formulate and enforce by-laws aimed at preventing crime and strengthening accountability mechanisms within their respective communities.
The engagements are part of an ongoing security and community sensitization initiative spearheaded by the Uganda Police Force across the Ankole Region and the wider Cattle Corridor. The initiative aims to enhance public safety, strengthen partnerships with communities, and promote proactive crime prevention.
The campaign will continue with more security meetings along the cattle corridor, including in Kazo District and Kiruhura District, as security agencies intensify efforts to strengthen security and community collaboration across the region.
