Ruparelia Foundation Launches RR Eye Camp Bukedea in Honour of Rajiv Ruparelia’s Legacy of Service

By Musisi Lwanga

The Ruparelia Foundation today officially launched the RR Eye Camp Bukedea, a large-scale medical outreach initiative designed to expand access to essential eye care for underserved communities in Eastern Uganda. The launch event, held at Kabira Country Club, marks the start of a mission to bridge critical healthcare gaps in the Teso sub-region.

The RR Eye Camp Bukedea is scheduled to take place from Friday, 27th to Sunday, 29th March 2026 in Bukedea Teaching Hospital, Bukedea District. The initiative aims to deliver a tangible health impact by providing:

● Free eye screenings and basic treatment for at least 2,000 community members.

● Approximately 300 cataract surgeries, including 50 specialized surgeries for children.

● Distribution of over 800 free reading glasses.

● Public education on preventive eye care and common conditions.

A Legacy of Service Beyond medical objectives, the 2026 camp carries deep philanthropic significance as a tribute to the late Rajiv Ruparelia. His life was defined by a commitment to disadvantaged communities and the belief that basic healthcare access should never be determined by geography or economic status. Under the theme “Continuing the Vision,” the camp connects his lifelong passion for service with the urgent needs of the Bukedea community.

What Makes This Camp Different?

The RR Eye Camp Bukedea 2026 stands apart for two revolutionary reasons:

1. On-Ground Theatre: Unlike many camps that refer patients elsewhere after screening, all cataract surgeries, treatments, and prescriptions will happen on-ground in Bukedea. This removes the logistical and financial barriers that often prevent rural residents from completing their journey to sight.

2. Specialized Paediatric Care: This is the first eye camp of its kind to include specialized care for children. With refractive errors impacting up to 60% of children in some regions, the Foundation will perform surgeries for up to 50 children completely free of charge.

The National Urgent Need Access to specialized eye care remains limited in rural Uganda. Approximately 6% of the population is visually impaired, with 2.5 million Ugandans suffering from moderate to severe impairments and 150,000 being completely blind. Cataracts are the primary cause of blindness, responsible for over 57% of cases.

Barriers to care are steep: as of late 2017, Uganda had only 48 ophthalmologists for over 42 million people, with half based in Kampala. Additionally, the high cost of treatment and items like glasses— which can reach 1 million UGX—prevents many from seeking care.

Collaboration for Impact the Ruparelia Foundation believes that partnerships amplify impact. By bringing qualified personnel and essential equipment directly to Bukedea, the Foundation and its partners aim to restore independence, dignity, and opportunity to those living in preventable darkness.

RR Eye Camp Bukedea 2026 has partnered with; Mulago Hospital – C-Care, Joban Group – Royal Pharma 2011 Ltd,  SINO – Uganda Mbale Industrial Park – Pepsi,  Krisha International Ltd, Win World Impex Ltd,  Dembe – Gittoes Pharmaceuticals Ltd,  Goldstar Insurance – Lato, Swastik Pharmaceuticals – Abacus,  Kabira Country Club, Sanyu FM, Indian Association – Rene Industries Ltd and Midas floors

Community members from Bukedea and surrounding districts are encouraged to attend and take advantage of these free services from March 27th to 29th.
