Suspended organised crime head General Richard Shibiri has testified that he learned about the raid at Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala’s premises through the Madlanga Commission that is sitting in Pretoria.
Matlala’s premises were raided in December 2024.
Evidence before the Commission shows that General Shibiri was in contact with Sergeant Fannie Nkosi a day after the raid occurred at Matlala’s premises.
Sergeant Nkosi is alleged to have sometimes played the middleman between General Shibiri and Matlala and communicated consistently with the pair.
But Commissioner Sesi Baloyi has put it to Shibiri that it is improbable that he did not know about the raid given his proximity to Matlala.
“We’re speaking about the improbability of you and Sgt. Nkosi not discussing the raid on Mr. Matlala when you speak on the 7th, a day after that operation and then when you speak again. Well, you have all of those chats and then you speak on the 20th, but in between he’s given you Mr. Matala’s contact details and as Commissioner Kumalo says that he knows you to have his contact details. He can’t just give it to you in a vacuum,” says Baloyi.
Shibiri has also accepted Commissioner Baloyi’s assertion that it would be difficult for someone to complain to him about Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala because of their proximity to each other.
Shibiri has previously testified at the Madlanga Commission that Matlala loaned him R70 000 to fix his son’s vehicle, which he has paid back.
He has further testified that he and Matlala had a cordial relationship.
Shibiri has since conceded to Commissioner Baloyi that his relationship with Matlala may have created a negative perception about him.
“I hear you, and yes, other people can take it like that and say, ‘no, we can’t go to him if we have something against Matlala, because Matlala once assisted him’. But if it was saying, I assisted Matala for exchange of something, it will make it worse. It will make it genuine for those people to think like that. But anyhow, I can’t think … everybody will think the way they want to think. But yes, I agree with what you are saying. It puts perception (sic) to other people,” says Shibiri.
