Police in the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area have arrested 175 suspects following intensified security operations aimed at curbing rising criminal activity in the city.
The operations were ordered by Kampala Metropolitan Police Commander, Ezekiel Emitu Ebaku, who directed all Regional Police Commanders (RPCs) and Divisional Police Commanders (DPCs) in the metropolitan area to strengthen security efforts.
Working together with other security agencies and local leaders, police conducted disruptive operations in several crime-prone areas after residents raised concerns about increasing incidents of robbery, phone snatching, and attacks on pedestrians, particularly at night.
In the Old Kampala policing area, officers carried out operations in Musajjalumbwa Zone and Namayiba Bus Terminal, where 97 suspects were arrested. Police recovered several exhibits, including suspected narcotic substances, a hammer, knives, and other items believed to have been used in committing crimes. The suspects were charged at Old Kampala Police Station and remain in custody pending court proceedings.
According to the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, another operation was conducted in Kiwatule Central Zone targeting individuals involved in the abuse of narcotic substances and related criminal activities. A total of 28 suspects were arrested and are currently detained pending screening and court processes.
Owoyesigyire added that police also raided several criminal hotspots in Seeta, particularly in Nasuti, where suspects were allegedly involved in narcotic drug abuse, robberies, burglaries, and theft. The operation resulted in the arrest of 50 suspects who are currently in detention pending screening and prosecution.
Police say similar operations will continue across the Kampala metropolitan area as part of efforts to improve public safety and dismantle criminal networks operating within the city.
