Blitzboks chase third win and World Series title in New York – SABC News

The South African sevens rugby team is hoping to produce its best performance of the season at the New York leg of the World Rugby Sevens series this weekend. The Blitzboks need to finish higher than Fiji to take the World Series title. They are also chasing a third consecutive tournament win, after winning the Perth Sevens last month and the Vancouver Sevens last weekend.

The Blitzboks are looking for a ‘three-peat’ this weekend that will also seal the World Series title. It could be a weekend to savour for the side that goes into the New York sevens off the back of consecutive tournament wins.
Blitzbok captain, Impi Visser, says winning on successive weekends is an art in Sevens rugby.
“You know, it’s always interesting after a successful weekend to make sure you get back to zero, keep your feet on the ground, and put in the hard work again. This weekend, everyone is starting from the same platform; everyone is starting from zero, so we must get back there. I think the team environment is good and positive. Hopefully, the guys are feeling a little better after a tough weekend, but we definitely have a tough pool, so we’re going to have to make sure we’re ready for it,” says Blitzbok Captain, Impi Visser.
Visser’s own personal milestone of 50 tournaments will not complicate the goal for the weekend. The captain is adamant that he knows how to put personal achievements on ice and focus on the team goals first and foremost.
“Definitely not getting inside my own head and making this weekend bigger than it is. We have a goal that we set for ourselves, we want to win this league, and that is our focus. For myself, it’s just about focusing on my job and making sure that I lead the team well,” he says.
The setting for the final tournament of the series also lends itself to a big finish to the World Series.
“Growing up watching movies, you always see the New York skyline and all the Hollywood films shot here. Now, to be able to stand here, it’s a little cold, as you can see, and it’s starting to snow at the moment, but it’s an exciting weekend for all of us. Especially with it being my fiftieth tournament, it’s quite special,” adds Visser.
The Blitzboks play New Zealand, France and Australia in Pool A, starting just after 17h00, on Saturday afternoon, 14 March. They’re in the Big Apple hunting for their New York City moment.
