Scores of people flock to Cape Town beaches amid heat wave – SABC News

Large numbers of people have been flocking to the beaches of Cape Town, which is in the grip of a heatwave.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) says record-breaking temperatures have persisted across parts of the Western Cape this week.
Temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius have been recorded in the Cape Town Central Business District (CBD).
Mthokozisi Mkhungo from KwaZulu-Natal is visiting Cape Town and says, “We are here today because yesterday it was very sunny, even if you were staying in the shadows, it was still very hot. So, today I decided to come here to the beach so that when the sun rises, because I know it will be very hot, I can slow it down by getting to the beach, that is why I am here today.”

Heatwave conditions continue across parts of the Western Cape today, with very hot to extremely hot temperatures expected in several areas.

Meanwhile, the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company has urged the public to take precautions when hiking during the hot temperatures.
The Cableway’s managing director, Wahida Parker, says visitors should plan hikes early in the morning or late afternoon.
Parker has also encouraged visitors to avoid unnecessary exposure and seek help immediately if in distress.
“We are thrilled to welcome guests to enjoy Table Mountain’s magnificent weather and breathtaking views. But safety remains our guiding principle. We encourage every visitor and hiker to stay hydrated and to dress in a way that prepares you for whatever the weather throws at you,” adds Parker.
