Protesters hold a Palestinian flag as they gather outside the International Court of Justice (ICJ) as judges rule on emergency measures against Israel following accusations by South Africa that the Israeli military operation in Gaza is a state-led genocide, in The Hague, Netherlands, January 26, 2024.

Six countries intervene in SA’s case against Israel at ICJ

Six countries have made declarations of interventions this week in South Africa’s case accusing Israel of genocide at the International Court of Justice, including the United States.
Washington’s submission in addition those from Hungary and Fiji have come out in support of Israel, while The Kingdom of the Netherlands, Namibia and Iceland have made arguments in support of South Africa’s claim that Israel committed genocide in the prosecution of the war against Hamas in Gaza, in which over 70 000 people, mostly civilians, were killed.
More than 20 countries have made interventions in the case thus far.
The United States said in its intervention that it affirmed, in the strongest terms possible that the allegations of genocide against Israel were false and “unfortunately nothing new”.
It argued in its submission that international fora had been misused to level false charges of genocide against the State of Israel for decades as part of a broader campaign to delegitimise Israel and Jewish people to encourage terrorism against them.
Countering this, the Netherlands government said it would argue that the forced displacement, the withholding humanitarian aid and the resulting starvation of Palestinians could point to genocidal intent by Israel.
