Free State Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae says the late Congress of the People (COPE) leader Mosiuoa ‘Terror’ Lekota believed public office carried with it a moral obligation to the people and principles of and he believed deeply in the principles of fairness and good governance.
Letsoha-Mathae addressed Lekota’s Special Official Funeral at the Old Grey Sports ground in Bloemfontein on Saturday. Among the mourners are Deputy President Paul Mashatile, formers presidents Thabo Mbeki and Kgalema Motlanthe.
He passed away last week at a Johannesburg hospital at the age of 77.
Letsoha-Mathae says, “There are moments in life of a nation when it struggles to carry the weight of memory, unfortunately today is such a moment. Today we gather not only to mourn but to reflect on a life of a man whose journey was inseparable from the long and painful march of our people toward freedom.”
She says Lekota belonged the generation of South Africans who confronted injustice ‘not as an absent idea but as a daily lived reality.’
“This world was disfigured by racism, the which the dignity of a black person was denied . It was against such as world that Comrade Terror rebelled, Comrade Terror was amongst those South Africans who when confronted by injustice and the brutality of apartheid resolved that their lives will not be live in quiet subjection, he chose a long and difficult road of struggle.”
Letsoha-Mathae says his imprisonment on Robben Island and his Delmas Treason Trial experience shaped the man that we remember and celebrate today.
She says as premier, Lekota understood that public office carried with a moral obligation to the people.
“He believed deeply in the principles of fairness, justice and good governance. He insisted that the new democratic state must be guided not by patronage but by the rule of law and accountability, those worked with Ntate Lekota will attest to that he carried his understanding of leadership into the office of government, he believe that democracy will only be enjoyed if those that are entrusted with power, exercise it with humility and integrity.”
