ActionSA says the aim of its proposed Zero Tolerance Corruption Bill is to introduce mandatory minimum sentences to ensure stronger accountability for corruption offences in South Africa. The party’s Member of Parliament Dereleen James, says corruption has been normalised in the country, leaving communities without basic services. She says there’s an urgent need to send out a clear message that corruption will not be tolerated.

“We did say when we came into Parliament, as actionists say, you know, in our policy commitment, we have declared corruption as public enemy number one. But we cannot just declare something public enemy number one, and talk about it, and see and hear about it now more than ever in AD-HOC and Madlanga, and sit and fold our arms. So when we came in, we knew corruption was rife. We heard about it and we started working on this bill. Yesterday, sort of, we announced it, it was gazetted yesterday. The public now has 30 days to make their submissions and so forth.”
