Gauteng residents cautiously optimistic after SANDF deployment – SABC News

Residents in parts of Gauteng say they are cautiously hopeful following the deployment of soldiers to support police in crime-affected communities.
This follows the deployment of South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers to several areas plagued by illegal mining and violent crime in Johannesburg.
The soldiers are part of the more than 500 troops deployed across Gauteng to support police operations aimed at combating illegal mining, gang violence and other serious and violent crimes as announced by the president last month.

WATCH | Institute of Race Relations defence analyst Ricardo Teixeira argues that deploying the SANDF to communities troubled by gang violence and illegal mining will have a positive short-term impact, but a long-term strategy is needed to root out crime in those areas. pic.twitter.com/PBgKFF5twK

Spotlight on SANDF deployment: Ricardo Teixeira weighs in

Fear in Randfontein
For months, fear has gripped parts of Randfontein on Gauteng’s West Rand. Residents in the Sporong informal settlement abandoned their homes and sought refuge at a local community hall, fearing for their lives from the Zama Zamas.
While many residents have welcomed the additional security presence, one of the community members Piet Willem says fear remains widespread in his area.
“There are a lot of things that are going on here but people are very scared to talk. I hope this will clear the crime in the area especially at night because during the day is easy,” says a resident.
Displaced families in Sporong informal settlement have now gone back to their homes.
“I feel very safe and comfortable. And now we can sleep at ease and have a peaceful Easter weekend, weather holidays are long. We are used to hearing gunshots every night. So you must now duck and dive or sleep on the floor because you don’t know where the a stray bullet will strike through your window,” says a resident.

While many residents say the presence of soldiers has brought a renewed sense of hope, others remain cautious, saying long-term safety will depend on sustained law enforcement and lasting solutions to crime.
For communities like Riverlea, Newlands, Eldorado Park and Randfontein, the hope is that the increased security presence will restore stability and allow residents to feel safe again.
“I don’t feel safe because of the shooting and the drugs and everything. I really don’t feel safe,” says a community member.
Authorities say the deployment will focus on stabilising high-risk areas, conducting patrols and supporting law enforcement operations. Spaces that were once considered safe for families and children have increasingly become hotspots for organised crime.
