KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Mntomuhle Khawula has announced the reopening of arts centres that were not in operation in various parts of the province.
Khawula made the announcement after attending one of the performances of the acclaimed theatre production, King Cetshwayo – The Musical, this past weekend.
The play, which is set to tour the African continent and the United States later this year, is a result of a collaboration among different arts centres in the province, including the Wushwini and Indonsa Arts Centres.
The theatre production tells the story of AmaZulu King Cetshwayo’s leadership during the growing invasion of Zululand, leading to the historic Zulu victory at the battle of eSandlwana on the 22nd of January 1879.
MEC Khawula says more art centres are expected to reopen.
“We are trying to spread the footprint of the department, the footprint of government throughout the province of KwaZulu-Natal. The Winston Churchill Theatre is just about to be opened, the Osizweni Theatre is about to be opened, the Enyokeni Precinct, the honourable Premier AT Ntuli is still coordinating departments. So, as to talk about its usage, it’s one of the beautiful precincts. You know the people of the province must feel government wherever they are; they must get the benefit of being citizens of KwaZulu-Natal,” says Khawula.
